Mental Science Beliefs

What is Mental Science?

Mental Science is one of the earliest New Thought paths. Adherents are agnostic or atheist and contend that it is important to develop oneself because an outward focus on invisible beings fosters the growth of ignorance and magical thinking. Mental Scientists are often practitioners of physical yoga, meditation and use the tools of affirmation and visualization, but are do not use the terms God, Goddess or any theistic word, instead using terms like the Unified Field.

Mental Scientists emphasize personal development as the vehicle to awaken ones' latent abilities. Although Mental Science emphasizes personal training of mind and body, there is a strong ethical component to this path which emphasizes ongoing improvements within society to insure opportunity for the entire gene pool. In contrast to some adherents of other forms of New Thought Mental Scientists affirm that while each person must develop ones's self because "changing one's thinking, changes ones' life," people are ethically tasked to insure that society's infrastructures such as roads, bridges, water delivery systems etc... to prevent accidents and the proliferation of water bourne diseases.

Some Mental Scientists like to refer to Carl Sagan's works such as Science As a Candle in the Dark as reading which clarifies their path, and the recent film Zeitgeist as essential viewing to understand their Weltaunschaung.

"Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, wakens." ~ Carl Jung

The Mental Science emphasis on concrete material changes in the circumstances of life can sometimes cause friction with some old New Thought fundamentalists who feel that life is basically an illusion and that problems should be solved with prayer. The primary difference between contemporary Mental Scientists and adherents to some 20th Century New Thought forms is that Mental Scientists place a strong emphasis on the truth that one's fellow beings are real and since compassionate action has been proven to be a key factor in evolutionary success that the contention that everything is an illusion that can be solved with prayer is a stoic stance that does not empower individuals or societies.

Some Mental Scientists like to point out (perhaps sarcastically) that they are the quintessential "unbelievers" feared by some Abrahamics. This is perhaps a reference to their skepticism regarding the mystical and their rejection of magical thinking. Mental Scientists argue that the provision of opportunity for the youth of nations within the compass of the free world is essential to thwarting the proliferation of terrorism.

While Mental Scientists embrace many of the practices of New Thought and often attend New Thought Centers to enjoy community and sharing, they reject theological tenets that accompany such beliefs. While some would expect that Mental Scientists would reject compassion or the wisdom teachings, this is not true. Mental Scientists overwhelmingly embrace concrete action which empowers individuals and support the rights of all people to hold whatever beliefs they desire.

Contemporary Mental Scientists place a strong emphasis on Human Rights and the importance of shifting consciousness from the Domination / Submission paradigm that characterizes many cultures to the Partnership paradigm which has been proven to be scientifically superior.

One should not expect Mental Scientist not to be informed about other New Thought paths or religion in general. Often they study religion with the goal of deeper insight into the respective adherents of different paths.

There are many wonderful New Thought organizations with diverse root texts and a variety of approaches to those texts and distinct methods of teaching.

Explore different New Thought beliefs and choose the approach that best suits you. While we are aware that the majority of people who choose the New Thought Path do not find a New Thought Community that suits their sensibilities, we encourage you to visit the different centers.

The basic premise of New Thought is that which is Divine is Good and Omnipresent. New Thought is based on Universal Spiritual Principles as demonstrated and taught by historical figures such as Buddha, Danika, Lao Tzu, and Jesus the Christ. It is understood there are many "Wayshowers." The strength of the teaching of a particular Wayshower is demonstrated through the consciousness and actions of the followers of that path. The adherents of each spiritual path are collectively responsible to the rest of humanity and all life to insure that the expression of their path is not abusive or violent nor violates the rights of other beings.

As mentioned above, New Thought is inclusive and draws on the wisdom of all traditions that teach the truth of our Unity with God/Good and the omnipresence of God/Good.

New Thought Day was declared by James Edgerton on August 23rd, 1915
During research while expanding the free New Thought Library, one of the ministers came across an interesting quote from early New Thought Alliance President James A. Edgerton: "'The truth, once announced, has the power not only to renew but to extend itself. New Thought is universal in its ideals and therefore should be universal in its appeal. Under the guidance of the spirit, it should grow in good works until it embraces many lands and eventually the whole world.' ~ New Thought Day, August 23rd , 1915."
